The voice of Los Machucambos that made famous Latin American Folk songs in the world.

 Costa Rican Pride…

Born in Costa Rica in 1934 and since very little had interest in music. She was the granddaughter of the former Costa Rican President Leon Cortes Castro (1936-1940). 

 At the age of 20 years, she went to Europe to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to be an official of the Costa Rican Embassy in Madrid, Spain, later in Rome, Italy and later to arrived in Paris, France. 

In the late 50’s, Julia agreed to be the interpreter of the band Los Machucambos. It was a trio composed by Rafael Gayoso (Spanish) and Romano Zanotti (Italian), who interpreted at the beginning, Mexican folk songs and then they turn to interpreting the most famous Latin American folkloric songs. 

No doubt that the most representative rhythms of Los Machucambos was the Cha Cha Cha. But also they handled other rhythms and sounds that made their music an exquisite experiment. 

The amazing musical arrangements of several traditional songs from Latin America were combined with the melodious and perfect voice of Julita Cortes, What a voice!

Also her style really call the atention of people. In their presentations she used a variety of  traditional clothes of the Latin American countries. Included in her style were the peasant dresses and costumes of the famous Polleras (original from Colombia and Panama) 

And for the 60’s, Julita and Los Machucambos reached great popularity in France and other European countries. Achieving international tours and presented in prestigious theaters as in the famous L’ Olympia of Paris. 

 Julita recorded over 600 songs with Los Machucambos and earned two gold albums and four platinum albums. 

Julita unfortunately had to abandoned his musical career in 1970 because of health problems, she returned  to Costa Rica for his recovery. Los Machucambos continued to record new albums and with new singers, but the voice of Julia would never be replace by anyone. Julia didn’t return to her musical career and she spend that time entirely unnoticed. 

It was in 2005 when Julia Cortes and Los Machucambos returned again to met for their last concert in San Jose,Costa Rica. 

 Her death also was unnoticed, only very few people knew about the terrible news. She died in San Jose, Costa Rica on November 21, 2008. Her ashes were scattered in the mountains of Escazu, where she lived. 

I think all her fans would liked to know more about her, how was her personality or how were her experiences in the international music. But I think she was a very reserved person and an artist who never sought fame in any way. She was an extraordinary artist, her voice is incomparable, an artist of quality and a pride for Costa Rican and Latin American music. 

 I hope that many people may know of Julita Cortes and The Machucambos and enjoy the great legacy of their music.

La Gran Julita Cortes

La voz de Los Machucambos, que hizo famoso el cancionero latinoamericano en todo el mundo.

Orgullosamente costarricense…

Nació en Costa Rica en el año 1934 y desde muy pequeña tuvo interés por la música. Fue nieta del expresidente de Costa Rica León Cortes Castro (1936-1940). 

A la edad de los 20 años partió hacia Europa, para trabajar con el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores siendo funcionaria de la Embajada de Costa Rica en Madrid, España, luego en Roma, Italia hasta llegar a París, Francia. 

A finales de los años 50, Julita aceptó ser la intérprete del grupo Los Machucambos. Se trataba de un trio, integrado también por por Rafael Gayoso (español) y Romano Zanotti (italiano) ,quienes interpretaban al principio, canciones populares mexicanas para luego pasar a interpretar todo el cancionero folklórico latinoamericano. 

Sin duda alguna el ritmo más representativo de Los Machucambos fué el Cha Cha Cha. Aunque también manejaron otros ritmos y sonidos que hicieron de su música una expericiencia exquisita. 

Los increíbles arreglos musicales de varias canciones tradicionales de Latinoamérica se combinaron con la melodiosa y perfecta voz de Julita Cortes, ¡ que voz !  También su estilo llamó mucho la atención de la gente, ya que en sus presentaciones utilizaba una variedad de trajes típicos de los países latinos. En su estilo se incluían los vestidos de campesinas y los trajes de las famosas polleras, originales de Colombia y Panamá. 

Ya para los años 60 Julita Cortes y Los Machucambos alcazaron gran popularidad   en Francia y otros países de Europa. Logrando realizar giras internacionales y presentarse en prestigious teatros como en el famoso L’ Olympia de París. 

Julita grabó más de 600 canciones con Los Machucambos y obtuvieron dos discos de oro y cuatro de platino. 

Lamentablemente Julita tuvo que abandonar su carrera musical en 1970 debido a problemas de salud y regreso a Costa Rica para su recuperación. Los Machucambos siguieron grabando nuevos discos y con nuevas cantantes, pero el lugar de Julita jamás iba a ser igualado por nadie. Julita no volvió a retomar su carrera musical y pasó todo ese tiempo totalmente desapercibida. 

Fue en el año 2005 que Julita Cortes y Los Machucambos se reunieron otra vez para  realizar el último concierto en San José, Costa Rica. 

Su muerte también pasó desapercibida, solo muy pocas personas conocieron la terrible noticia. Murió en San José, Costa Rica el 21 de noviembre del 2008. Sus cenizas se esparcieron en las montañas de Escazú, el lugar donde vivía. 

Creo que todos sus fanáticos, hubiéramos querido saber mas de Ella, como era su personalidad o que hablara más de sus experiencias en la música internacional. Pero considero que ella era una persona muy reservada y jamás una artista que buscara la fama de cualquier manera. Ella fue toda una artista, su voz es incomparable, una artista de calidad y un orgulllo para la musica costarricense y latinoamericana. 

Espero que muchas personas puedan conocer de Julita Cortes y Los Machucambos y disfrutemos del gran legado de su música.
