Metropolitan Opera Live from New York: The MET Opera in Live HD will close its 2011-2012 season with La Traviata, opera by Giuseppe Verdi.

Violetta Valéry knows that she will die soon, exhausted by her restless life as a courtesan. At a party she is introduced to Alfredo Germont, who has been fascinated by her for a long time.

The guests are amused by this seemingly naïve and emotional attitude, and they ask Alfredo to propose a toast. He celebrates true love, and Violetta responds in praise of free love (Ensemble: “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”). She is touched by his candid manner and honesty.

Alone, Violetta is torn by conflicting emotions—she doesn’t want to give up her way of life, but at the same time she feels that Alfredo has awakened her desire to be truly loved (“Ah, fors’è lui… Sempre libera”)…

Metropolitan Opera Live from New York: The MET Opera season continues with a new production of Manon, opera by Jules Massenet .

The story takes place in France. People gather for the arrival of the coach to Paris, among them Lescaut. He is waiting for his young cousin Manon, who is on her way to enter a convent.

The coach arrives and Manon expresses her exuberant joy about her first journey away from home. Enchanted by her, Guillot ( a noble man) offers to take Manon to Paris, but she and his companions laugh at him.

The young Chevalier des Grieux arrives too late to catch the coach, which has already left for Paris. He falls in love with Manon at first sight, and when she tells him that it is her fondness for pleasure that has led her family to send her to a convent, he is determined to rescue her from such a fate. They escape together…
